I want to silk screen on clay (for the first time.) Is it better to screen slip onto greenware (and at what stage) or to screen glaze onto bisque?

I am new to this process and so far I have only screened onto leather hard clay. On porcelain I have screened right onto the clay. On stoneware I have put a white slip down first and waited till the slip was almost dry. It was a tiny bit tacky still when I did the screen.
